Upgrading disk space of the A110L
The Acer Aspire One A110L sports an 8GB SSD, connected via a 40pin ZIF interface, which is expandable using a designated Storage Expansion slot. You can upgrade to comfortable 24GB of disk space with a 16GB SDHC card. It will automagically be merged with the existing disk space by the magic of aufs. 16GB SDHC cards by Transcend have been verified to work. It is probably safe to say that most brands will work.

Alternative
The AA1 can be equipped with a ZIF to CF converter and a fast Compact Flash card. Said converter, made by ABLY, is available for $6.55 including free international shipping. Transcend makes 133x rated 16GB and 32GB CF cards, and 300x rated 16GB CF cards.

Another Alternative
Available from a few different companies, like Toshiba and Samsung, are 1.8" hard drives with a 40pin ZIF connector. You can use an IDE to ZIF converter, available for $4.27 including free international shipping, if you have an 1.8" drive with only an IDE connector.

Yet Another Alternative
A buspowered portable hard drive, requiring no external power adapter, like the Western Digital My Passport series. Available in up to 500GB configurations in many different colors.

Interesting article.

I've followed yours and some others mod tips for my Acer Aspire One, to expand OEM SSD.
I've found exactly the ZIF->CF adapter in your article same brand and type, but it doesn't work.

I've a Maxdata 16GB 233x CF card, the ZIF->CF adapter, different ZIF flat cables but none works, I've controlled cable position, but nothing the BIOS says HDD model name NONE.

I've also an Hitachi 30GB 1,8" ZIF drive, but nothing, the drive doesn't turn on. The drive is fully working the ZIF cables are new and perfect, but nothing work.

It seems there're some Aspire One locked and nothing but the original 8GB SSD card works.

just a shot in the dark: the cable you use might be swapped to the effect that pin 1 of the mainboard is connected to pin 40 of the CF adapter.

Reading back, I come across this little part im assing a comment to...

A western digital passport is nothing more or less the a normal notebook harddive. its perfectly compateble whit linux, but you have to format it. its ntfs defaulth..or was.

If someone realy realy wants to its possible to add a normal 2,5" drive into any AA , theres a good "tutorial" vid on google.
use/do at own risk as it will void any warranty.

All of these upgrade options I found rather expensive for the dismal space you get. I soldered on a sata connector to my A110 and added a 320GB 2.5" HDD. Easy to source a 2.5" HDD and theyre super cheap too. Well worth it the effort.
